Anatomy Study: Structure over Style?
While starting up a character animation project, I ran across a small Anatomical problem.
Usually I draw straight from my head without much reference at all, thinking that the character's body looks right and everything seems to be fine.
While sketching up the character for my scene I applied alot of style without much regard to him looking anatomically correct.
I sketched this without any anatomy reference, Looks good so far, but I thought it looked perfect until I finally took the time to check out how Real human arms look like.
After taking a look at an unskinned muscle reference I came up with these more realistic looking arms. He looks bulkier and less blocky.
Now here's the problem. I LIKE BOTH!
With they way I drew the character before he seems to have a sharp rugged yet blocky feature, but the anatomically correct one is technically the "right" way to do it and it does have a more natural feel.
In that case it is hard to judge which looks better.
Style gives it the "umf" I'm looking for but Structure gives it the reality it needs.
Wants vs Needs.
Wrong vs Right.
Style vs Structure.
Cool vs Smart.
apparently the biggest challenges in today's world .
So in your opinion, which one would be more appealing to you.(reason why would be veeeerry helpful)
